Catnip is a hardy herb and is a member of the mint family. It’s not only an aesthetically pleasing addition to your garden, but catnip also makes for a great herbal tea. Not to mention, your feline friend will go crazy for it!

Catnip Growing Season

Catnip is a warm-weather herb and should be planted in the late spring. Catnip does best when planted in areas that get an average of six or more hours of direct sunlight a day but will grow fine in a partially shaded garden. You should plant your catnip about 1 foot to 1 ½ feet apart to give the plants adequate space to reach their mature size. Catnip grows best in alkaline soils with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5.

On average it takes 80 to 90 days for catnip to reach maturity, and you will know when your herb is ready for harvest when the plant has a 12” to 14” spread and is 18” tall. Catnip should be harvested as soon as the plant is mature and before the leaves turn yellow. When harvesting catnip, cut the entire stem at the base of the plant in the morning before it gets too hot.
