Italian Large-Leaf Basil Growing Season
Italian large-leaf basil is a warm-weather plant and should be planted in the late spring. Basil does best when planted in areas that get an average of six to eight hours of direct sunlight a day. Spread your basil seeds evenly throughout your garden and cover with ¼ inch of fine soil. Seedlings should emerge in one to two weeks.
On average, it takes 60 to 90 days for Italian large-leaf basil to reach maturity, and you will know that your basil is ready to harvest when the plant has a 12†to 18†spread and is 18†to 24†tall. Once your basil reaches maturity, the leaves can be harvested throughout the summer and early fall.
