Garlic Growing Season
Garlic is a cold-weather herb and should be planted in the fall between September and November before the first frost of the year. Garlic needs a six- to eight-week cold period that doesn’t get above 40 degrees F to fully develop mature roots. Garlic does best when planted in areas that get an average of six to eight hours of direct sunlight a day. You should plant your garlic bulbs about 2 to 4 inches apart and 2 inches deep (with the wide root side facing down and pointed end facing up). Plant the garlic in rows that are 10 to 14 inches apart.
On average it takes seven to eight months for garlic to reach maturity, and you will know that your garlic is ready for harvest when the plant has a 4†to 6†spread and is 18†tall. To harvest garlic, carefully dig up the bulb and allow the garlic to air out in a dry shaded spot for two weeks before it’s ready to use.
