You don't even have to clear an area of competing weeds. Just throw and some alyssum seeds and some will eventually take root and bloom, but if you want a true carpet of white flowers, you'll have to help 'em out a little. If they get a head-start on competing weeds, they'll hold their own and will grow virtually anywhere so long as they have a smidgen of water. More water= more flowers, though. I plant this for the ladybugs, and it's low-growing enough to plant under every fruit tree. Pretty, undemanding, and useful. Can't get much better than that.
